What is Beingism.org?

Are You a Beingist?

Beingism is a philosophy of life based on rationality and compassion for oneself and others. It is nondogmatic, progressive, and atheistic.

You might be a Beingist if you believe:
- Reason and science are our best means of understanding the universe.
- Everything that exists is natural -- nothing is supernatural.
- Ethical values are subjective, but nevertheless very important to people.
- There's no such thing as free will, and causality appears to play a significant role in the way our world operates.

Other premises include:
- Everyone wants to be happy and have a fulfilling life.
- Although suffering is sometimes unavoidable, no one deserves to feel pain.
- People are generally more likely to be happy in a culture where they can exercise choice over their lives.
- We all benefit to some extent from the success of others, and with effort and patience, society can be structured such that this is even more the case.

If you agree with these ideas and you wish to call yourself a Beingist, then you are one. Please join us! If, on the other hand, you're not sure about some of it ‹ or if you just flat out disagree ‹ let's communicate.

from the organizer...
"I am going to ask you to do one thing before Tuesday, and that is to start the geometric growth process a week ahead of time. I plan on asking everyone at every meeting to bring another person to the next meeting so we will double in size every week until Cheney/Bush Corp. is out of office. Instead of telling you that this Tuesday, I am asking you to bring a friend who is sympathetic to this cause and this movement. That shouldn't be that difficult as we all know dozens of citizens as concerned as we are with the state of our nation."

"Also: Bring any and all information, online links, discussion points, proposals for 'Action Steps' and anything else you think would be of help to each other...."

"One more thing:
We are committed to peaceful, non-violent, legal, constitutionally-protected action steps focused on demanding that the current White House regime step down immediately. Anyone who wants to take action in any other way, please do not join this group. Violence and illegal activities would only lower us to the level of those we despise and would negate our every effort."

"Thank you.
See most of you on Tuesday!"

Continued U.S. military occupation of Iraq is not making the people of Iraq secure. Instead, it creates a situation in which violence is bred. Show your opposition to the occupation of Iraq and the false "transfer of power." Say NO to fake sovereignty, colonial control, endangerment of both U.S. soldiers and Iraqis.

Camp Quest for Kids!! - Become a Counselor?

Sunday, July 22, 2007@7:30am.
Camp Quest of Minnesota is affiliated with National Camp Quest (Ohio), the first secular summer camp for youth in the history of the United States. Camp Quest was specifically designed for children of Unitarians, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists, or whatever terms might be applied to those who maintain a naturalistic, not supernaturalistic, world view. Our campers are girls and boys ages 8-17.

Purpose

  • Promote a sense of belonging to a large freethought community among the youth participants
  • Encourage critical thinking in young people to enable them to draw their own conclusions
  • Promote respect for others with different viewpoints, values, and beliefs
  • Provide a safe and fun environment for personal and social development

Our 2006 camping dates are July 23-30. Camp Quest of Minnesota will be held again at the Voyageur Environmental Center (VEC) in Minnetrista, Minnesota, about 25 miles west of Minneapolis (shuttle service from airport provided with prior arrangements). We are excited to have exclusive use of this fine facility during our camping session. Camp Quest leases VEC from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.

SunsetCamp Quest's purpose is to build a strong, healthy community among the youth participants. In addition to fun camp activities such as swimming, canoeing, fishing, archery, campfires, stargazing, and outdoor sports, Camp Quest's knowledgeable counselors and guest volunteers will lead the youth in learning activities that teach them about freethought and humanist principals. Activities cover critical thinking, science, history, civics, and ethics. Campers develop and improve their rational thinking skills in fun, hands-on learning activities and programs.

Camp Quest of Minnesota is part of a growing network of six Camp Quests throughout North America. We primarily serve youth from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa, but anyone is welcome.

Visit the website for additional details about becoming a counselor, or to sign up your child...

Mental Health Day on the Hill

Tuesday, March 28, 2006@10:00am for 4 hours.
Day on the Hill
The annual mental health day on the hill will be held on March 28th. This year our theme is “Investing in Mental Health Makes ‘Cents’” We will have cards with pennies on them for you to bring to your legislators’ offices. We also encourage you to bring a jar of pennies to the rally to demonstrate your community’s support for mental health services.

The legislative briefing will begin at 10 a.m. at a NEW location: Christ Lutheran Church, 105 University Avenue West, St. Paul (just across the street from the Capitol) ( Please note: No food is allowed and you need to park at one of the ramps or surface lots.) The rally will take place at noon in the rotunda of the Capitol. Be sure and make an appointment to visit with your legislators after 1 p.m.

Come to the Capitol and demonstrate your support for increased funding for mental health services. We need more affordable housing, employment opportunities, community mental health services, and family supports. We need better educational outcomes and fewer people ending up in the criminal justice system due to untreated mental illness.

Local affiliates are encouraged to organize busses and vans in your community so that more people can attend.

Protect the Vote!

Tuesday, November 7, 2006@6:00pm.
Every poll points to a Democratic victory on November 7. Yet George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove all insist Republicans will win.

Are they planning to steal another election?

Let's start a Blue Revolution across the USA on Election Night to stop Republicans from stealing Election 2006.

When the polls close, we propose that Democrats across the country gather outside their County Election Office for a candlelight vigil to Count Every Vote, all wearing the same color: Blue.

Imagine a Blue Revolution, every bit as joyous and historic as the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Cedar Revolution Lebanon, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and the other democratic revolutions of recent years - right here in the United States of America.

Help us organize a vigil in your county - just login to Democrats.com and click "Local." If you don't see an Election Night Vigil in your county, create a new Forum Topic coded "Blue Revolution," select "County," post the location of your County Election Office, and spread the word to your friends.

More here:
http://www.BlueRevolution.us

You can also join Cindy Sheehan for a Blue Revolution rally at the White House on November 7. She'll be there from the 6th through the 9th (at 10 a.m. on the 9th we'll deliver the www.dontattackiran.org petition). More info: http://www.gsfp.org

Make sure your voter registration has not been purged - "google" your registration at MyDem.com. Prepare for other election-stealing strategies at ProtectYourVote.org.

Waiting for someone else to save your democracy FOR you?

It doesn't work that way. Calling all concerned citizens...Activate!

We have a great opportunity in front of us with the upcoming nation wide protest against this withering regime. Here's our chance to hammer in the final nail in this administration's coffin by swinging the November elections in favor of political leaders who demand accountability. But, it can't be done without organizing. This is where all you great folks come in.

Post these flyers all over your neighborhood.(large files, they will take a minute)

Poster 1 (Vertical)
Poster 2 (Horizontal)
Poster 3 (Imperial)
Poster 4 (Free Concert/Bands)

All day and into the night, across the country, we must decidedly break the paralysis that still grips too much of American political life. Coming together in massive gatherings, we must let the country and the world know: That there are millions of us who reject an illegitimate regime that is as criminal as it is dangerous to the humanity & future existence of the planet. That we will not acclimate to a political climate that is becoming everyday more frightening & reactionary. By our own mass political action that day, we will repudiate (reject) the whole direction the Bush Regime is relentlessly hammering into place. We will take an extraordinary step in a growing movement that is determined to drive Bush - and his agenda - from office.

*We are what we've been waiting for.*

Politics as usual cannot and will not meet the enormity of the
challenge. Despite popularity ratings lower than Nixon's and widespread opposition to an unjust war, official politics has failed to challenge this. The political will of the people is being betrayed and finds no voice. On Thursday, October 5th we must give it voice.

We can not count on some mythical pendulum to swing. This whole idea of putting our hopes into leaders who tell us to seek common ground with fascists and religious fanatics is proving everyday to be a disaster. Putting our energies into what powerful interests dictate as "electable" is a fatal logic. It funnels precious initiative into slavish "realisms" that are actually contributing to a sweeping re-making of legal, political and moral norms that carry the scent of fascism.

Ask yourself this: Where will this country and the world be, on the day after the elections of 2006? Will the world have to shudder? Will hopes and energies have been squandered again, leaving us further locked into politics that is cementing this situation in place for generations? Without massive protest and repudiation what millions of us believe is invisible and powerless.

Or will we make a breach in the walls being cemented all around us to say Enough! Basta Ya! with mass political action that does not compromise with torture & unjust wars, that rejects bowing down to theocrats & the immorality of empire. On Oct 5 join us in a day of honest, courageous resistance. What will you do to take responsibility for the future?

Protest the Anti-GLBT, anti-women and anti-family gathering

 Tuesday, October 3rd
5:30-6:30pm
Outside of Excel Energy Center
199 West Kellogg Boulevard
Saint Paul, MN 55102

Directions
Major highways (Interstate 94 and 35E) run through downtown Saint Paul, making it easily accessible from all parts of the state. The Xcel Energy Center is located on the corner of Kellogg Boulevard and West Seventh Street.
Who is James Dobson?
James Dobson is founder and chairman of Focus on the Family, an anti-GLBT organization that produces his internationally syndicated radio programs. Dobson is heard on more than 3,000 Christian conservative radio facilities in North America, where he urged millions of his followers to support anti-gay candidates in recent elections.

Besides mobilizing his members to vote for the Christian right, Dobson spreads the following lies about the GLBT community:

                   - Legalizing gay marriage could lead to marriage to donkeys
                   - Gay marriage is connected to the war on terror
                   - Stem Cell research is comparable to Nazi Experiments

Support OutFront Minnesota and challenge the lies about us and the people we love!

Say NO to U.S. War without End

Monday, September 11, 2006@4:30pm.

Say NO to U.S. War without End (2001-2006)
Monday 9/11 @ 4:30pm @ Peavey Plaza, 1111 Nicollet Mall, downtown Mpls.
We say: End to the US occupation of Iraq! Stop US aid to terror states like Israel & Colombia! Five years after September 11, 2001, 114,000 people have been killed, 9.6 million people have been made refugees, and $585,600,000,000 has been spent, in the name of fighting terror. The “war on terror” has U.S. troops occupying Iraq & Afghanistan, Israel on the offensive in Lebanon & Palestine, war with Iran is looming, and the Colombian civil war continues to be fueled by US dollars. At home, the “war on terror” criminalizes Arabs, Muslims and other immigrants, who are racially profiled, discriminated against, and at least 83,000 have been detained. In the face of this grim reality, the people of Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Colombia and the world continue to resist. We must do the same. Let’s stand up to reclaim 9/11 and make it a day of international solidarity with the people of the world! Sponsored by the AWC.

Protest-Bush in Minnesota!!!

Tuesday, August 22, 2006@12:30pm.
**Update:
I've visited the spot, and here's, hopefully the last update. The hotel is in an area where all the buildings are privately owned, and there are no sidewalks. This is somewhat restricting to us. However, nearly all trafic in and out of the hotel will go past Hwy 169 and Bren Rd. So, what I suggest is that we hold our protest on a sidewalk which is on the northern side of Bren Rd just West of the freeway. We can also use the sidewalks on either side of the freeway bridge to walk back and forth for the freeway traffic. This way we'll get traffic going in and out of the hotel, as well as general traffic. This is a preliminary plan, as secret service may attempt to put us in a "free speech zone" far away from any visibility. If they attempt this, I'll let every individual make their own decision as to how to react. There is obviously very serious doubt as to the constitutional legality of "free speech zones." See you at 12:30pm! Check the website for updates.
-------------------------
Bush will be speaking at a panel focused on "Health Transparency," beginning at 2:40 p.m. at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka. However, in past protests, Bush has shown up hours earlier to thwart protests which has left us high and dry once we got there. So, lets start our protesting at 12:30pm. Bring signs and costumes, etc. I've included a link below of the mapquest map to the building.

No Troops at the Border! Full Legalization Now!

Tuesday, May 23, 2006@5:00pm.
Minneapolis Federal Building, 4th St. & 4th Ave, Downtown Minneapolis

On national television on May 15th, Bush announced his version of immigration reform – sending 6000 troops to the US-Mexico border. His plans are yet another example of Bush’s use of violence as a solution to every problem. The Bush administration will send thousands of troops to the border in order to arrest millions of immigrant workers as they try to cross the border in desperate search for employment. Bush’s decision to use the military to erect "high tech fences in urban corridors," will force people into ever more dangerous and deadly crossings, and will send an ever larger number of people to silent death.

People throughout the US – in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles – have mobilized against Bush’s call to militarize the US-Mexico border. Join us for a protest here in Minneapolis to say:
No to Bush’s anti-immigrant campaign! Stop racist deportations and border militarization! Support full civil rights and legalization for all undocumented workers!

Cheney's in Minneapolis-Protest TOMORROW (Monday)

Monday, May 15, 2006@2:30pm.
Cheney is going to be at the MSP airport TOMORROW (Monday) afternoon at 3:25pm. Here's our chance to speak some truth to power, and hopefully get some media attention regarding this administrations crimes at the same time. We have protest signs, a bullhorn, and a banner.

UPDATE!!! I found a better location for us to meet. There are two Light-Rail Line "Park and Ride Lots" surrounding the area where we will be protesting. Let's meet in lot B (Northern of the two lots, next to Hwy-62). I've spoken with Metro Transit, and even the National Guard Security regarding whether the lots were going to be open given the security issues. They indicated that at this time there are no plans to close the lots. However, that doesn't mean they can't change their minds on a dime. So, we may need to wing it as conditions change. You may wish to be there early just in case. I'm planning on riding in on the rail.

We'll be protesting on the tax-payer provided sidewalks which connect that lot to the bus stop and Light-Rail stop. Feel free to arrive by rail, it's the "Fort Snelling Station" stop, or stop 12. The National Guard Wing where Cheney will be speaking is across the street. This is a great location, as much traffic goes through (a road, busses, and the train). If the authorities ask us to leave that location, there is a back-up location. We meet at 2:30pm in the North Parking Lot (B).
Here's a close up map of the area just South of Hwy-62 & Hiawatha where the Lots and Protest are.

We're kind of winging this one, as we we're working on a short notification (This is how the White house avoids protests, but we'll have none of it.)

You can remain in contact with my by calling my cell phone at 612-328-1451. Any updates will also appear here.

Minnesota Prepares for the Largest Pro-Immigrant Mobilization

by Alondra Espejel and Mary Turck

From out of the shadows and into the streets! During the past two weeks, millions of people across the country have come together to demonstrate the power of the Immigrant community against anti-immigrant legislative proposals. From far and wide, all the way from Chicago, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Houston, Arizona to Washington, whole families have hit the streets to protest and demand their rights.

And now, it's Minnesota's turn. Infused with the energy of the movement that is beginning to unfold across the country, immigrants and their allies will march to celebrate the contributions of the immigrant community and to oppose any anti-immigrant proposals.

On Sunday, April 9, after meeting at the St. Paul Cathedral at 2:30 pm, we will all march towards the Capitol building to demonstrate our strength and unity. This march is part of a national week of action coordinated to support an immigration reform that is fair and brings dignity to all immigrants.

"People have to come out into the streets on Sunday, to show that we as immigrants are hard working people that struggle for our families and our children, so they can have a better future. We are not 'criminals,' we are human beings and we deserve dignity and respect," says Mariano Espinoza, an immigrant community leader of Minneapolis. "Immigrants in this country are waking up, the immigrant people of Minnesota should not wait any longer, the time to fight for our rights is now," Espinoza asserted.

"We are expecting thousands of people from all over the state, we have strong reason to believe this will be the biggest pro-immigrant march in the history of Minnesota," organizer Teresa Ortiz said. Ortiz emphasized that this march, like the previous march in February, is an action supported by the Alliance for Fair Federal Immigration Reform of Minnesota (AFFIRM) and organized by the member organizations and individuals of this coalition.

The organizers of this march hope that, following the example of Los Angeles, the Latino media play a significant role in advertising the march and educating the immigrant community about this event so that people assist the march in high numbers. This is an event organized by religious, civic, community and labor organizations alongside students and individuals.
