SMART Recovery - Addiction Recovery Support Group

Here's a great resource which a friend of Beingism.org sent us:
------------------------
Greetings:

As the Public Relations Manager for SMART Recovery, I wanted to request that
you consider adding a link our group. Our mission is thoroughly in line with
yours, and we believe some of your members and/or visitors may wish to have
access to a non-12 step recovery group.

Here is the website with all the info: http://www.smartrecovery.org/

SMART Recovery® is the leading self-empowering addiction recovery support
group. Our group's program is heavily based upon the work of Albert Ellis
and REBT. Our participants learn tools for recovery based on the latest
scientific research and participate in a world-wide community which includes
free, self-empowering, science-based mutual help groups.

Thank you for your time. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any
questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Paul A. Toth

Study: U.S. Economic System Generates Teen Pregnancies

The Equality Trust -- One and a quarter million teenagers become pregnant each year in the rich OECD countries and about three quarters of a million go on to become teenage mothers. The differences in teen birth rates between countries are striking. In the USA the teenage birth rate is 52.1 per 1000 women aged 15-19, more than ten times higher than Japan, which has a rate of 4.6.

Babies born to teenage mothers are more likely to have low birth weight, to be born prematurely, to be at higher risk of dying in infancy and, as they grow up, to be at greater risk of educational failure, juvenile crime and becoming teenage parents themselves. Girls who give birth as teenagers are more likely to be poor and uneducated. Teenage motherhood is part of the inter-generational cycle of deprivation and social exclusion.

We have shown that teenage births are related to income inequality internationally in a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Other researchers have shown the same association in the United States. ... Read more

Societies w/Large Income Disparities Become Obese

The Equality Trust -- Obesity is increasing rapidly throughout the developed world. In some countries rates have doubled in just a few years. In the USA, three-quarters of the population are overweight, and close to a third are obese. In the UK, two-thirds of adults are overweight and more than a fifth are obese. Obesity increases the risk of hypertension, late onset diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gallbladder disease, and some cancers. The trends in children's obesity are likely to lead to shorter life expectancies for today's children - this would be the first reversal in life expectancy since the nineteenth century.

We found that obesity among men and women (see graph), as well as calorie intake and deaths from diabetes, are related to income inequality in rich countries. In addition, obesity in adults is also related to inequality in the 50 US states; and the percentage of children who are overweight is related to inequality both internationally and in the USA.

Societies w/Large Income Disparities Abuse Drugs More

The Equality Trust -- No one doubts the damage done by widespread drug addiction, both to its victims and in funding organised crime.

The World Drug Report 2007, compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime, contains the results of sample surveys on the prevalence of the use of opiates, cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy and amphetamines. We combined these in one index, giving them equal weights, and found a strong tendency for drug abuse to be more common in more unequal countries.

Among the 50 states of the USA drug addiction and deaths from drug overdoses are related to inequality. Again we found that the more unequal states had higher death rates.
